The Hike:

Kathy has been experiencing some knee challenges and her doctor and PT recommended she scale back her hiking activities. We get lots of requests for shorter hikes and the Bear Rocks Preserve in WV has been on our list for a while. Our friends at the Nature Conservancy do an amazing job of protecting our fragile natural resources. Bear Rocks came under their protection in 2024.

Bear Rocks Preserve is located adjacent to Dolly Sods Wilderness. Most of the trails in Dolly Sods are long and muddy. The short loop at Bear Rocks passes over rock formations much of the way and the trail was dry even after some heavy rains. The trail was well marked and well maintained.

This short hike is a great way to experience this unique area. We followed the loop counterclockwise. The trail passes through large patches of mountain laurel which were in full bloom in early July. Wild blueberries were just a few weeks behind. Great views and cool rock formations make this a great hike.

Beer Pairing:

Stumptown Ales in Davis WV is about one hour from the trailhead. This hop centric brewery pays homage to hops and IPA make up most of their beer portfolio. They have 8 taps of craft beer, wine, and pub fare.

Six Legged Frog IPA (6.8% ABV) is brewed with abundant Galaxy hops from Australia and is a must-try for any true hop head. Cave Dweller Pale Ale (5.9% ABV) is a nice balance between hoppiness and bitterness. Citra hops give this beer citrus and tropical fruit flavors. Cheers!

Hike and drink responsibly. Never drink and drive. Stay safe, be responsible, and leave no trace.
