The Hike:

This short hike has some incredible views. The drive to the trailhead is more of a challenge than the hike itself. For most standard vehicles, the best route to the trailhead is from route 32 three miles south of Davis WV.

The Canaan Loop Road starts out as a paved road and quickly becomes gravel and then a narrow dirt road. It’s a 10 mile drive from route 32. There are several pull off areas if a vehicle is approaching from the other direction. The road becomes narrow with very few pull offs for the last few miles. Arrive early to (hopefully) avoid other vehicles.

The hike itself is an easy walk through the forest. Numerous boardwalks pass over wet sections of the trail. The views at the end of the trail are truly amazing. The Monongahela National Forest and the Dry Fork Valley lie below and its hard to spot any signs of civilization.

Beer Pairing:

Big Timber Brewing has a new location 13 miles from the trailhead in Davis WV. Big Timber Logging Camp has 10 taps of craft beer, indoor and outdoor seating (with great views of the Blackwater River). Food trucks visit most weekends.

Kathy really enjoyed a pint of Mon Hazy IPA (7.7% ABV). Named for the Monongahela National Forest, this hazy IPA is perfection in a glass. Pete liked Private Idaho (5.8% ABV) a hazy IPA brewed with several hops grown in I-I-Idaho. Hoppy trails!

Hike and drink responsibly. Never drink and drive. Stay safe, be responsible, and leave no trace.
