The Hike:

The first day of our inn to inn hike on the AT in Shenandoah National Park begins at Swift Run Gap and US Route 33. See the logistics post for details on shuttle services and vehicle parking. The AT crosses US 33 on Skyline Drive and then veers into the forest on the right.

The climb begins immediately although its a gradual (but steady) climb for about 2 miles. This section of the AT doesn’t have the amazing views as the other sections on this trek. However, in early spring wildflowers are in bloom and just hiking on the AT is its own reward.

The trail skirts around the South River Picnic Area with a blue-blazed trail leading over one mile each way to South River Falls. Another short spur trail leads to the Pocosin Cabin. The cabin was built by the CCC in the 1930s and is owned by the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club. Follow the signs on the left to the Lewis Mountain Campground and walk through the campground to reach the camp store.

Beer Pairing:

The cabins at Lewis Mountain are the most rustic lodging in the park. The camp store sells a limited variety of groceries, snacks, and drinks including beer in cans. The store is open from 9am to 6pm. Arrive before 6 or bring you own beverages.

We enjoyed two favorites right from the can on the front porch: Big Meadows IPA (brewed by Basic City Brewing in Waynesboro) and Hazy Little Thing from Sierra Nevada. The porch is a great place to meet other hikers while sipping a cold beer. Cheers!

Hike and drink responsibly. Never drink and drive. Stay safe, be responsible, and leave no trace.
