The Hike:

This hike in Cumberland Gap National Historical Park has lots of history and a decent view at the top. Several signs and placards tell the story of the people and events in this area. The trail is well marked and well maintained.

From the parking area, followed the paved path to the iron furnace. The pavement ends and the climb begins as you continue on the Tennessee Road Trail. The trail reaches a junction with the Wilderness Road Trail. Bear left here and continue the climb.

At Cumberland Gap, follow the trail to the left to reach Tri-State Peak. The trail passes a rocky outcropping which is fun to explore. The kiosk at the Peak marks the spot where Tennessee, Virginia, and Kentucky meet. In 1665, this was the colonial boundary marking the western end of the American colonies. Enjoy the history.

Beer Pairing:

Cumberland Gap doesn’t have a brewery. We spent the night at the Olde Mill Inn in Cumberland Gap and just around the corner is the Nineteen19 Grill. The friendly folks server up really good food with a decent selection of craft beer. They also have an excellent bourbon selection. Voodoo Ranger IPA from Flat Tire Brewing (7.0% ABV • 50 IBU) is brewed with Amarillo, Cascade, Mosaic, Chinook, HBC 522, Strata, and Citra hops. It’s a solid IPA. Ruby American Red (5.3% ABV • 35 IBU) from Fat Bottom Brewing in Nashville is a nice malty red ale with a great copper color and just a hint of hops.

Hike and drink responsibly. Never drink and drive. Stay safe, be responsible, and leave no trace.
