The Hike:

This hike combines several trails with numerous trail junctions. We recommend downloading the AllTrails map to help navigate this route. We crossed Route 252 and began our hike counterclockwise on the red-blazed Mount Joy Trail.

The Mount Joy trail loops through the forest and makes a steady, gradual climb past Mount Joy. We crossed Route 23 and explored Washington’s Headquarters. Before returning to the AllTrails route. Follow the signs for the Horse-Shoe Trail which becomes a bit steep and rocky before connecting with the Mount Misery Trail.

The trail passes near the Knox Covered Bridge. The bridge dates from 1865 and is worth a short detour. The final section of the hike is paved and passes near the Knox Estate and the Valley Forge Farm before returning to the parking area.

Beer Pairing:

Stable 12 Brewing Co. in nearby Phoenixville PA is located about 20 minutes from the trailhead. Phoenixville is host to several craft breweries and numerous restaurants and is well worth a visit. Stable 12 has 16 taps of craft beer, cider, wine, and cocktails. The onsite kitchen serves up a variety of food items including salads, tacos, burgers, and sandwiches. They have indoor and outdoor seating and dogs are welcome outside.

Pete really liked Italian Stallion (4.8% ABV), an Italian style pilsner dry hopped with El Dorado, Citra and Simcoe. Kathy gave a double thumbs up to Super Mash Brothers (6.4% ABV • 55 IBU), a hazy IPA brewed with Citra, Idaho 7, and Mandarina Bavaria hops. Hoppy Trails!!

Hike and drink responsibly. Never drink and drive. Stay safe, be responsible, and leave no trace.
